Blues is a vocal and instrumental form of American music based on the use of the blue notes (note sung or played at a slightly lower pitch than that of the major scale for expressive purposes). It emerged as an accessible form of self-expression in African American communities starting from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The growth of the blues gave way to other derivative forms such as jazz, R&B, bluegrass and rock & roll as well as spouted various regional scenes across the US introducing new sounds such as the St Louis blues, the Memphis blues, the Detroit blues, the Kansas City blues just to name a few.
