Cumin is a seed of a plant native to one location---the Nile valley of Egypt-- but long cultivated in the eastern Mediterranean region, North Africa, India, China and the Americas. Known for its strong and heavy, spice-sweet yet acrid but warm smell, cumin is used in Moroccan couscous, North African merguez sausages, Tex-Mex chile con carne to name a few dishes.
