Kompa, a derivative of the spanish term "compas" (or rhythm, tone), is a music genre orginated on the island of Haiti. Developed by Haitian jazz musician Nemours Jean Baptiste, kompa is thought to be inspired by the musical stylings found in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The distinction of kompa is the typical accompaniment of Haitian creole vocals.
