Product Description
Ragtime , originating in the African American communities, is a uniquely American syncopated musical phenomenon that predated jazz and was very popular during the period of 1897 and 1918. Also finding popularity within the Red-light districts of St Louis and New Orleans, it is thought to be a modification of the military march made popular by composer John Philip Sousa as well as the poly-rhythms found in African music. One well-known Ragtime composer was African American Scott Joplin. Having composed such classics as Swipesy and The Maple Leaf Rag, Joplin earned the distinction of King of Ragtime.
